Rome as a Republic

Summary:   Explores the rise and fall of the Roman Empire. Explains how Rome became more and then less of a Republic.


Rome was one of the greatest Republics of all time. According to legend, Rome was founded by twin brothers Remus and Romulus, who were the sons of Mars and a Latin Princess. When they were young they were abandoned near the Tiber River and were raised by a wolf. Eventually, they fought against each other and, as you might be able to guess, Romulus, hence Rome, was victorious. The truth is three groups inhabited the region that eventually became Rome: the Greeks, the Etruscans, and the Latins. The Etruscans heavily influenced the development of Roman culture and around 600 B.C. an Etruscan became king. Although the region was not controlled by the Etruscans, Rome prospered and grew under the Etruscan kings.
