Oedipus

Summary:   Discusses the play, Oedipus, by Sophocles. Provides a detailed plot summary. Analyzes the character of Oedipus. Describes how he is fulfilled by prophecy.


The chronological tale Oedipus, written by the extensively known author Sophacles, is a story of a man who is unaware of his past. The whole story explains how Oedipus doesn't know himself. Oedipus didn't know himself because he was unaware of the fact that he filled the prophecy, his whole life was a riddle, and he was punishing his own deeds.

To begin with, one reason that Oedipus doesn't know himself is that he is unaware of the fact that he filled the prophecy. "There was and oracle that came to Laius.... and it told him that it was fate that he should die a victim at the hands of his own son."(Line 711) This quote is saying from the point of view of Jocasta that her son Oedipus will be her husband's demise.
