Friendship and Mango Street

Summary:   Discusses the theme of friendship in The House on Mango Street, by Sandra Cisneros. Describes the importance of friendship and relates to the novel in a personal way.

Have you ever had some type of friendship with someone? In house on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros they refer to friendship. I personally think friendship is very valuable. Ma and Sandra Cisneros have many different and similar theories on what Friendship is.

Friendship to me is very important. For example, you always know they got your back. So if you get into trouble they can help you out. If you get into a fight they can back you up and even help you win. In addition, the person must be able to be trusted. You don't want a friend who will be talking trash about you all the time and behind your back, that's not cool. You also don't want a friend that will run at the first sight of trouble. The person being trusted and all ways having your back are some things to me that make friendship.

I and Cisnero author of Mango Street have many similar and different thoughts on what friendship is. For example, Cisnero thinks that paying someone money to be your friend is friendship which is shown in this line from the book "I don't have any friends except for Cathy who is my friend till Tuesday" I don't agree with this. If you want a friend you have to find them on your own. You can't just pay someone to be your friend its like soliciting prostitution without the sex part though and paying someone to be your friend looks pitiful. In addition, I agree with Cisnero on the theory that it doesn't matter what your friends look like which is shown in this line from the book their clothes are crooked and old. They are wearing shiny Sunday shoes without socks. It makes their bald ankles red, but I like them. Especially the big one who laughs with all her teeth." Who ever you hang out with is cool. It doesn't matter what your friends look like as long as there cool and down to earth. Cisnero paying for friends is not cool and is one of the differences we have and not caring what your friends look like is a similarity that we have.

Well as you have seen I think that friendship is Important and valuable to life. Friends should be cool and trustworthy which is on characteristic to good friendship. I and Cisnero do not agree on everything about friendship, but that's cool because everyone thinks differently about what friendship means to them.
