Holes

Summary:   Reviews the novel, Holes, by Louis Sachar. Provides a plot summary. Describes why it was an enjoyable story.

The story that I read is named Holes. It was a great book! It is about a boy who was accused of stealing Clyde Livingston's cleats that was going to be given to the homeless shelter and was expected to sell for 5,000 dollars. He was then sent to Camp Green Lake and he was forced to dig holes to build character, but building character was not the only reason he had to dig holes. Here is the story.

A boy named Stanley Yelnats was accusing for stealing baseball cleats from a homeless shelter. But the thing is he was completely innocent. It was the last day of school for him. His day was not very good at all. Well, I kid named Derek stole his note book from him and put it in the toilet. He had to go and get it. By the time he got his note book back he missed the bus. That is where the problem started. He started to walk home and when he was walking he walked under a freeway over pass, shoes fell from it and hit him on the head. He thought it was shoes from destiny, because his dad was a scientist and he was trying to make a way to recycle old shoes. So Stanley thought that was shoes that would help his dad make a way to recycle old shoes. He was so excited that he started running. Then a police car pulled him over and asked why he was running. The police car then saw the shoes and arrested him.

He then went in to trial and was given a choice to either go to Camp Green Lake or Jail. He picked Camp Green Lake. When he got there after the eight hour drive he was given the rules. Every morning you are to wake up at 4:00. You will then eat breakfast and dig a hole. The hole must be five feet deep and five feet wide. The shovel will be your measuring stick. He was very confused, Stanley thought that there was going to be a lake, and he would get to swim in it. He was definitely wrong.

The next day he went to dig holes. He dug for a very long time. Every one did, except for a kid named Zero. He was done very quickly. He was also one of the quietest people in the camp. In fact he didn't even talk at all. Well soon Stanley became friends with Zero and he got him to talk. Later on Zero got very upset and ran away, Stanley followed him. The police then came and they found out that Camp Green Lake was run by criminals! They were making the kids dig so they could find a treasure chest filled with money. The owners were all arrested, but Stanley and Zero were still gone. While they were gone, they found peaches and were surviving off them. They brought jars back, and they were then kept at his house above his fathers experiment place. The jar was then accidentally knocked over and the peaches fell into his fathers experiment. It was then the cure. They then made a lot of money!

I don't want to give the story away, and there are a lot more details. So you should read the book to get more. I would have to say that this is my favorite book that I have ever read in my entire life! I would recommend it to any one. So who ever reads this you should go to the library and check this book out and read it. You can even buy it because this is a book that you can read over and over again. I am sure that I will. Thank you Louis Sachar for writing this book! I could not put it down, and I love when books are that good.
