Sula, The Influence of Family

Summary:   Discusses the novel Sula, by Toni Morrison. Examines how Sula's upbringing influences who she becomes as she gets older. Summarizes the story's plot.


In the novel Sula, Toni Morrison shows how your upbringing influences the person you become as an adult. The two main characters Nel and Sula were two of a kind, yet as they grew older their different views and morals tear them apart.

Sula was brought up by her mother Hannah and grandmother Eva. The two women are both single but receive much attention from men. Yet while Eva enjoys harmless flirting, Hannah sleeps with many different men whether or not they are married. Never does any of these affairs turn into lasting relationships. Their house is very lively with constant boarders taken in by Eva. Much change goes on in the home while Sula lives there, but she seems to adapt well.
