The Count of Monte Cristo, by Alexandre Dumas, is a book filled with vengeance and suspense. Dantes loves and is loved by Mercedes and is blind to the fact that those who he considers friends betray him because of their jealousy. Dantes is thrown into jail after his enemies plan an evil plot against him. While in the dungeons of Chateau D'If, he thinks up a revenge plan to do when he gets out. After he escapes from prison, he starts following through with his vengeful plan, but with a new identity. Edmond Dantes begins as a trusting man, learns that not everybody is trustful and plans his revenge, and completes his revenge in the end. Mercedes, Abbe Faria, and Haydee influence Dantes' changes. His transformation begins with his first love, Mercedes.
