Imperialism in Africa

Many different reasons caused imperialism in Africa. In the early 19th century not much was taken over but in the late 19th century almost the whole of Africa had been conquered. There were many reasons why it suddenly was consumed by imperialism.
The need for raw materials and markets was one of the causes for imperialism in the late 19th century. The imperialist powers had to have raw materials for their industries and it could be acquired cheaply from colonies in Africa. For example, rubber was produced in Liberia and copper was mined in Zambia. Also the colonies made good markets because the imperial powers could sell their goods to their colonies for a high price. They could make sure the colony couldn't get the products they were selling from anywhere else.
