How and Why Does Pip Change after the Return of Magwitch?

Summary:   Discusses the Charles Dickens novel, Great Expectations. Describes how and why Pip changes after the return of Magwitch. Provides a character study of Pip.


Pips character changes and develops continuously through out Great Expectations. There are three stages of Pip's character from his transition from a 'small bundle of shiver' to a mature man with a strong sense of loyalty, justice and honesty. This mature sense of loyalty and justice comes after the return of Magwitch; when his world unravels and he learns the truth and dishonesty in his life. As a character, Pip's two most important traits are his immature, romantic idealism and his innately good conscience. Pip in the first half of the book has a deep desire to improve himself and attain any possible advancement, whether educational, moral, or social.

Before Magwitch's return Pip is vain, and arrogant, he has been deceived by Mrs Havisham that she is his benefactor. When Pip becomes a gentleman he immediately.....
