The Journey

Summary:   Describes how journeys, in particular imaginative journeys are represented through Robert Frost's poem, The Road Not Taken, and the book cover of The Ivory Trail by Victor Kelleher. Considers the connotation of journeys.


A journey is a term which implies travel or movement from one position to another. However this definition restricts the full scope of ideas that journeys can represent. Journeys are such that they can occur physically, intellectually or emotionally and can offer new sights and experiences but more importantly offer insights and personal growth on the part of the traveler. The concept therefore often denotes an alteration, transition or evolution of the traveler due to the many trials and tribulations faced on the journey. Imaginative journeys are intangible journeys induced in the mind and have a multifarious and limitless quality. They conceptually present us with milieus of imagination, speculation and inspiration. Two texts which demonstrate journeys include the poem "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost, the popularity of which is such that an aphorism has.....
