Summary: Describes how many ancient love myths demonstrate the Greek fascination with tragic endings. Discusses three Greek love myths, Pyramus and Thisbe, Orpheus and Eurydice and Eros and Psyche.
Many of the Greeks' love myths end tragically, with the exception of a few which have happy endings. The stories of Pyramus and Thisbe, and Orpheus and Eurydice both have unfortunate endings. However, the story of Eros and Psyche can have either a tragic or a happy ending, depending on which version is told. The love of Pyramus and Thisbe was originally forbidden. However, the two were inseparable. They would secretly talk to each other through a crack in a common wall that their houses shared. One night, they agreed to meet each other in an open field where they would be able to talk freely. The hopes of the two lovers being together began to rise. On that night, Thisbe waited for Pyramus underneath a mulberry tree. While waiting, she caught a glimpse of a lioness who was going to the stream for a drink of water...
