Sure, women had it rough back in the days of yore, but what most people don't know is that men had it just as bad. The chivalric code required a knight to live up to near impossible expectations and abide by practically unjust laws. It required a perfect balance between heroics, courtly love, and Christian faith and practice which could be thrown off at the slightest of events. Too many accounts of honor told by the knight himself deemed them arrogant and guilty of the sin of pride, but too few instances of courage titled them as cowards, which then rendered them unfit to marry. For these reasons, superb knights were a sparse and extraordinary breed, but still Yvain had it all. He was courteous, valiant, and in touch with his spiritual side, not to mention his royally loyal sidekick. But the balance so hard to come by...
