The Problem with Piggy

Summary: Analyzes Lord of the Flies, by William Golding. Discusses Golding's use of the character of Piggy as a scapegoat. Discusses his attempt to prove his philosophy that man when returned to the wild is not Rousseau's noble savage.
In literature, each character is given a distinctive role in relation to the author's purpose. In Golding's novel, Lord of the Flies, Piggy, the character set apart from the rest, is quickly portrayed as the scapegoat, but the author also uses him as a tool to point out flaws in human nature and society. Each of the boys easily falls into his own role on their island because of the way Golding is able to distinguish their personalities. By looking at Piggy's place in their island society, one is able to observe the interaction between people of different personalities, be those people on a deserted island or in heart of civilization.
