Marriage was very different in colonial days. Most girls were married when they were thirteen to seventeen years old. If you were not married by the age of eighteen, your parents would begin to lose hope that you would ever marry. Not to be married by the age of twenty-five would be very shameful. Many women had as many as five children by the time they were twenty-one. Most women could choose their husbands, but a company called the Virginia Company bought young European girls from their families and sometimes even kidnaped them to sell to men in the colonies.
