Comparison of Heart of Darkness and Apocalypse Now

Summary: This essay compares the novel Heart of Darkness and the film Apocalypse Now. Notes similarities between the theme and major characters. Reveals how time and setting differ between the two and what effect that has on each story.
The novel, Heart of Darkness and film Apocalypse Now share many similarities but also a few differences. The setting and time period are very different but the meaning of both are the same. Throughout the book, the main character is Marlow and is experience in the Congo, while Kurtz is the main focus in Apocalypse Now. The setting of the book is the Congo in Africa during 1890. However, Apocalypse Now is during the 1970's when America was in Vietnam. I think Vietnam was an appropriate setting because people did not want to discuss what was happening and the film showed the savagery and pointlessness of the Vietnam War.

Kurtz is portrayed as the same character in both the movie and novel. He is man that has gone insane and reached his breaking point. He has no restraint and his methods are unsound. He has been overcome by evil...
