He is investigating the death of Eva Smith who had committed suicide in the infirmary. He has some evidence to prove that each member of the family had something to do with her. He wants to know why she committed suicide. He wants to find out if they were all involved in the suicide, and he wants to teach them a lesson. He wants them to care for each other and treat people with respect. He hopes that after he has left the Birlings will become better people and care for each other...
