The poem "Death of the Bird" is a sad story about a bird on its last migration. The author, Alex Derwent Hope, wrote about how the bird just lost her instinct to keep flying and instead died. This poem is a huge link to the passages in the book 'Fly Away Peter'.

In both pieces of writing, the authors want the readers to try and think about the concept of birds migrating. How is it that you could watch a creature pottering around your garden, looking for food, that only weeks before had been on the other side of earth? It had seen Asia, Africa, lakes, deserts, valleys, mountains and so much more. Was this bird ever taught how to navigate the world without a map? How does it know, out of the whole world, that.....
