In the time period before and during 1850, many difficult issues plagued the nation. These issues were the topic of much controversy and threatened the stability of the country. As conflicting opinions concerning the issues developed, crisis became eminent. To end the debates regarding the issues of the time, the country's leaders sought out a compromise that would satisfy everyone. Unfortunately, these particular issues had become too complicated to be resolved with the Compromise of 1850.

By 1850, many issues were obvious throughout the country. However, the most eminent one, which can also be linked to many of the other rising problems, was the issue concerning slavery.
