Gandhi: a Man of Peace

Summary:   Essay consists of a brief summary of Mahatma Gandhi's life and work.


On January 30th 1948, Mahatma Karamchand Gandhi headed to a peaceful afternoon prayer in New Delhi. A large crowd had gathered to hear one of the most important men in the 20th century speak. Nathuron Godse, a Hindu militant, rushed passed the crowd and knelt to Gandhi's feet to kiss them. As guards led Godse away, he pulled a Beretta revolver from concealment and fired three shots from point blank range directly at Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhi's last words were "Hai Rama" meaning O God. Violence had killed a man devoted to peace. Mahatma K. Gandhi had dedicated his life to passivity and peacefulness. Everywhere Gandhi went he spread ideas of harmony and defended people's everyday human rights.
