It Takes Two

Summary:   Essay discusses the personalities of the characters of Gene and Finny in John Knowles' "A Separate Peace."


"..I lost a part of myself to him then, and a soaring sense of freedom revealed that this must have been my purpose from the first to become a part of Phineas." A Separate Peace, a novel written by John Knowles takes place during World War II at a boarding school called Devon. Finny and Gene are best friends even though their personalities are quite different. In the story Gene says that he and Finny are two parts of the same person. The fact that they are two parts of the same person can be described through Gene and Finny's personalities.

Gene has a very unique personality. Gene is extremely intelligent. Gene aims to be valedictorian. Even Finny says, "Nobody at Devon has been surer of graduating than you are. You aren't.....
