Human Dignity

Summary:   Essay shows how the aspect of human dignity is expressed in one of Chief Joseph's speeches, and "A Raisin In The Sun" by Lorraine Hansberry.


Human dignity is expressed in many literary pieces. Human dignity refers to respect for oneself as well as other people. This concept is found in a passage from Chief Joseph's speech and in the play A Raisin In The Sun by Lorraine Hansberry. In these pieces of literature, human dignity was portrayed by characterization, dramatic irony, situational irony, and point of view.

In Chief Joseph's speech, Joseph can be characterized as wise, peace loving, respectful and frustrated. He also had high morals and refused to intentionally harm others. He was wise because he gained much knowledge from his ancestors, had much respect for nature, his ancestors, and enemies, which in return, he preserves human dignity toward others. Many of his morals and beliefs revolved around equality. Chief Joseph's frustration came about from the injustices his tribe faced.....
