Adam had a hard time when his father died and since then he has faced many conflicts, both internal and external.

At the beginning of the chapter and at the end of chapter 5, Adam wanted to go home and be with his family instead of fighting in the war. This was an example of an internal conflict and an external conflict. The reason I think it is an internal conflict is because he is arguing between himself and whether he goes and fights or not is totally up to him. Also, the reason I think this is an external conflict is because it will effect many others. The less people the militia has, the worse.
