Submarines

Summary:   This essay gives a history of the submarine. It also tells how the modern day submarine works, and of its many uses.


Many people have dreamed of a machine that was able to travel underwater. Leonardo Da Vinci was one of those people. He had very complex and detailed drawings of a machine that could travel underwater. Another of those people was Jules Verne, a French author, who wrote a book called 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. This book was about the adventures of a submarine called the Nautilus. The Nautilus was also the name of the first nuclear submarine made by the United States.

The first submarine was called the Turtle, invented by Dave Bushnell. One man operated the Turtle, used in the Revolutionary War. It only had enough air for a half-hour underwater. The Turtle would sail above water to an enemy ship, where it would go under water, drill a hole in the enemy ship,.....
