Difference in Opinions

Summary:   Essay discusses the difference in opinions between Thomas Jefferson and Alexis de Tocqueville.


In my readings of Thomas Jefferson and Alexis de Tocqueville, the opinions of each other differed in many instances. At the same time many people of the time differed about the same issues that were discussed in their writings. The issue at hand is slavery, and the problems that arise from it. While many southerners would say that it was just labor for cheap, history shows us the hardships slaves faced on a continuous and daily basis. Tocqueville in his writings tells us that, slavery originated with an individual whose name history did not preserve, wafted like a accursed germ on soil, nurtured itself and grew without effort. It then spread naturally with the society to which it belonged. In short, he says that slavery was not an instant success at its start but grew on.....
