The Influence of Miguel Hidalgo on the History of Mexico

Summary:   Explains Miguel Hidalgo's influence on the history of Mexico.

Miguel Hidalgo played a major role during Mexico's fight for independence, as well as simply helping other villagers with their daily struggles. According to infoplease.com, "As parish priest of the village of Dolores, Hidalgo attempted to improve the lot of the natives." In 1810, Napoleon began his foray in hopes to seize power of Spain and other areas. Beforehand, Hidalgo joined a committee, which, soon enough, took action to stop the raise of taxes and free Mexico "from the oppression of the Spanish Colonial government," as told by Microsoft Encarta 98 Encyclopedia.

When Hidalgo went through towns with a banner of Mexico's patron saint, he received support from many people throughout the country. The group of people marched their way through the country in hopes for freedom. Although Hidalgo was eventually captured and killed, his efforts continue to be remembered each year on September 16. On this day, we remember Mexico's fight for freedom and people, such as Miguel Hidalgo, who made a difference.
