The Key to Freedom

Summary: Essay is Neil Perry's thoughts before he decides to use his fathers gun to commit suicide in the novel "Dead Poets Society" by Tom Schulman.
He doesn't understand me; he will never understand me. Another ten years at school, that truly is a lifetime. Why won't he let me be me? He has used me like his own personal puppet, to do all of the things he never got to do, to take all of the opportunities he never had. He wants to use me to live through, yet he can't be bothered to understand my feelings.

Acting was all I needed; it was all I needed to escape from reality and it was all I needed to live some life other than my own. I take off my shirt and coat and take some deep breathes. All those paths I was thinking of taking have vanished, or have faded to the point where I know it's not worth exploring them. Empty days are ahead, and I am not looking forward to them...
