Summary:   An Analysis of the novel "The Good Earth" by Pearl S. Buck. Also describes how Wang Lung's uncle served as a very significant conflict in this story.


There is a leech in almost all families. In The Good Earth, Wang Lung's uncle was the leech who is a constant source of trouble to Wang Lung. The uncle was the younger brother of Wang Lung's father. After Wang Lung became rich, his uncle and his family decided to move in with him.

The uncle and his family are a constant source of trouble in many different ways. The uncle and his wife are lazy and very greedy. They constantly ask Wang Lung for silver. The uncle's wife helps Wang Lung by arranging the union between him and the beautiful Lotus. The son of the uncle is a very lustful man. He lures Nung En, the eldest son of Wang Lung, into prostitution during adolescence. Later, he lusts after Wang Lung's daughter and the slaves.
