The Legacy of Mao Zedong

Summary:   Provides a description of China's economic, political and social state after the death of Mao Zedong.


After Mao died in September 1976, Maoism has changed greatly in china due to Hua Guofeng's success to Mao's position as chairman and premier. During the period of 1976-79, Hua guofeng and his party slowly changed China in a programme in what H.R Cowie called 'demaoification'.

According to Immanuel C.Y. Hsu It was mistakes from the cultural revolution that helped Hua Guofeng and Den Xiaoping modernise in a ethical way. If it was not for Mao, Hua Guofeng and Deng Xiao Pings would of not have a reasonably successful modernisation and change economically, politically and socially. Hua wanted international exchange in culture, science and technology to develop a highly democratic and highly cultured modern society.
