Of Mice And Men: Power

Summary: Curley, Curley's father, and George are all connected because they have power over someone.
George, Curley, and Curley's dad are all connected because they have power over someone. They all have control over someone and they are not used to being pushed around.

In the book, the boss of the ranch is in control of everything. He has the choice of who works on the ranch and who does not. "'Hey, what's your stake in this guy"'" says the boss in a scene where George and Lennie have just arrived on the ranch. This quote shows that he can control who works for him and who doesn't. He can fire someone just because he doesn't like him.

Curley has a lot of power on the ranch because of his father's status on the ranch. Everyone is afraid of him because his father can fire then at any given time for any given reason. He can do whatever he wants and the fact that he has a very large ego does not help that. In the book he is always pushing everybody around because he knows that they are afraid of him because of his father. "'Get up you big bastard! I'll show you who's yella!"" Curley shouts when he sees Lennie smiling at him. This quote shows that Curley will pick a fight with someone no matter how big they are, because he thinks that he is "handy" and that no one will fight him anyway. When Lennie does fight back, and hurts Curley very badly, and breaks his hand, Curley is shocked because he thought that no one on the ranch dared to fight him.

Lastly, George is related to both of them because of his power over Lennie. Lennie really is afraid of George, and he used to beat Lennie and Lennie didn't ever try to hurt him. "'He could have broke every bone in my body but he never lay a hand on me.'" This quote shows that no matter what George does to Lennie, Lennie is terrified of George. He looks up to George and whatever George does seems right to Lennie.

In conclusion, George, Curley, and Curley's dad are all related because they all have power over someone. George used to abuse his power, but now he does not. Curley's dad, the ranch boss, does not abuse his power he just does what he thinks is right in running the ranch. Curley abuses his power all the time, and is always picking fights with people, but I think now he has learned his lesson and he probably will not pick fights with people any more.
