Watership Down Book Report

Summary:   Gives a brief book report of the work Watershp Down by Richard Adams.

In the book it practically portrays rabbits as humans. That is what made it so interesting, fun, and very weird. I hope you enjoy my report and it influences you to read the book.

The book begins describing the peaceful field where the rabbits live with the sparrow watching over them. It went to describing how Fiver and Hazel all started this move of the warren. Fiver had a nightmare that a bad spirit was in the warren and that they should move away. They went to see the chief rabbit Oswal. Then it quickly moves into an urgent council meeting. The request was denied but Hazel and Fiver left to escape the spirit and hopefully find a new settlement place. When they left they had no idea what they were getting into.

Not long after they had left they were deep into the forest. Not much has happened but they had a few suspicions nothing major. Dandelion was telling of The Blessing Of El-ahrairah. This is it, "Long ago, Frith made the world. He made the stars too, and the world is one of the stars. He made them by scattering his droppings over the sky and this is why grass and trees grow so thick all over the world. Frith made rivers flow. They follow him as he goes through the sky, and when he leaves the sky they look for him all night." "Now El-ahrairah was one of the animals in those days that had many wives." He also had many children that ate and ate at the world. Frith and asked him to control them and he said, well basically, no. Then Frith sent out the fox, the stoat, and the weasel to kill the rabbits then Frith gave the rabbits strength and speed forever.

They continue the journey they next day, no real danger has risen to the rabbits yet. They came to a river. There was no crossing and rabbits are like cats they hate water. So they had to swim through the water. They did that unwillingly but they did it for the rabbits. It started getting rough and hard for the rabbits. They gather scraps of food so that if they are on a dirt path that has no grass, they are always guaranteed food. No one has solved many problems they just have them and deal with them.

After fighting off a bunch of rats in a bam the rabbits get to Watership Down. From here they can see in every direction. One of the rabbits Hawkbit finds five old rabbit holes near a low bank; they are so old they don't really matter. Now at least the rabbits were safe from danger.

Blackberry wanted to find a better spot on the down. He thought that they could build better holes. Their search brought them to the bank of beaches and the ground was soft enough to build high-quality holes. At night the rabbits heard a noise. It was the former chief of the rabbits. He was tired and hurt and bluebell was with him.

The rabbits dug out holes around the beech trees until they ended up with a honeycombed structure under one. Hazel helped a mouse that was being eaten by a hawk. Because of this he was called crazy. Bigwig thought that because of hazels actions the burrow would be crawling with mice. They talk to the mouse and he promises to help them because hazel saved him. Former chief holly gets well again and explains he will not taking over.

Holly explains that the day after this group left men came around and plugged up the holes and set other ones on fire. That killed most of the rabbits in the warren. Most of the rabbits that escape through other holes were shot as soon as they were seen. They found them because one rabbits told them that they had gone to mountains far away.

The rabbits get a protector named Keharr. He is a gull, when they found him he was hurt and starving. The saved him and made friends too. Some of the rabbits move out to start a new warren. The gull found two girl rabbits for them and showed them where they were. Hazel doesn't go but does go on a special trip. They go to a near by farm where they have rabbits and they tell him about being civilized rabbits. They leave to late to return to the warren so the sleep under a bridge. They make it back to the warren the next day and within the next they went back to the farm and save the hutch rabbits. A man shot Hazel and the gull picked it out of the leg and saved Hazel. Within a few days hazel was well enough to be back in the warren. Every one is thankful that he is still alive especially Fiver. And the hutch rabbits were doing better than expected in the wild. The same group goes back and gets the girl rabbits from effare. The don't remember the way so the have the gull show them. They cross the railroad, which means they are close to the girls. When they finally get there they have to leave because they were behind schedule. On the way back they get miss leaded just a little and end up at a river. Again rabbits don't liker water but because they have no idea where they are they are so they cross the river. On the other side they meet General Woundwort. He started to accompany them. After a while they heard thunder it was very loud crisp thunder. The rabbits thought that it would be far enough away that they could make it farther. The thunder was loud and built up more. Then it started to rain and it rained for a long time then it finally broke up.

They come to some bridges that cross the river and that was when they decided to turn around. They traveled and saw everything again that day. When they went to bed all they could be happy for was they were going home. The next day they reached the farm of the hutch rabbits. Now they knew they were on the right track and they next day they were home.
