An explication of Domenico Ghirlandaio's life and work.

Painter, mosaicist and possibly goldsmith, the Florentine, Domenico Ghirlandaio, (1449-1494) was head of one of the most active workshops in late 15th century Florence. Neither an innovator nor experimenter, he was rather a synthesizer who profited from everything that had been done before and who summarized the state Florentine art had reached by the end of the century. He developed a style of religious narrative that blended the contemporary with the historical in a way that added to the basic characteristics of early Renaissance art. He was called to Rome in 1481 to work in the Sistine Chapel, and throughout the 1480's, he received prestigious fresco commissions, ending in 1485 with decorating the Tornabuoni Chapel in S Maria Novella, Florence. He also completed many panel paintings, either autograph.....
