The idea of expanding the American empire has always been enticing for the people of America. One of the very reasons for American dissent and the ensuing American Revolution in the 1700's was the lack of power Britain was willing to give the Americans to expand. Expanding has always been something Americans have wanted to do. In its early stages, expansion was sought after merely, for the acquisition of more farming land. Then, as America became more advanced, expansion became the solution for lacking economic opportunity, it became the remedy for national discontent, and it became the key to expanding America's borders. However, during the late nineteenth century and into the early twentieth century, expansion developed a new face.
