Inherit The Wind: The Real Scopes Trial

Summary:   Compares the Cate's trial in the novel to the Scope's trial in real life. It compares and contrasts the correct and added information from the trial to the book.


In the novel Inherit the Wind authors Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee do not give an accurate account of the real life Scopes Trial. Cates, the temperature, and jail were different from the novel and the real Scopes Trial. Although the novel is entertaining and amusing, it is very different from the trial on which it was based. However, the addition of characters and little changes to the actual trial make the book more enjoyable and easier to read. Therefore, I think changing the trial to be more entertaining was a great idea. Otherwise, it probably would have been too dull, and somnolent.

In the novel Bertram Cates is modeled after John T. Scopes of Dayton Tennessee, his girlfriend, Rachel Brown was fictional, along with her father Reverend Brown. These characters must have been added.....
