As I sat watching his chest rise and fall effortlessly, I realized he would never take breath for granted again. My dearest friend since elementary school would never open his eyes again. He could no longer speak, eat, or even move. There was no hope that he would ever awake from his coma. I sat with his parents as they made the hardest decision of their lives. I sat holding his little sister in my arms as his parents signed the forms. Tears of pain, loss, and relief streamed down all of our faces as the doctor removed the IV from his arm and the mask from his face. His parents ultimately decided that taking him off life support was the most humane and decent thing they could do for their almost completely lifeless son.
