"The Company Man" by Goodman
This man who works himself to death finally and precisely at 3:00 am Sunday morning-has a painfully repetitive, cold, and lonely, company-driven life.  Both the essay and the man's life, ironically, are driven by contrast and repetition.

    Phil, a perfect Type A, a workaholic, plays a very distinct, detached role in life as opposed to his wife, Helen.  Using a satirical yet, pitiful tone, Goodman demonstrates their contrasting personalities and values throughout "The Company Man."  While Phil dedicates his time to the company six days a week, five of them until eight or nine at night, Helen, a good woman of no particular marketing skills, mothers their three children.  Their twenty-four year old daughter, who is very close to Helen, has never felt she has had anything to say to her father when alone with him.  Despairing and humorous all at...
