In any feature film the director carefully constructs all characters through the use of the film techniques in order to shape and influence our response towards the particular character. `Gattaca' directed by Andrew Niccol explores the issue of genetic engineering through a storyline in which genetically engineered people are seen as superior and important, and naturally born people are looked upon as worthless. The intelligence of every newborn baby is known through a simple DNA test and they are instantly marked as valid or invalid, a label that stays with them for life. The main character in this story is Vincent, a naturally born young man whose dreams of becoming an astronaut are ruined by the prejudice society in which he lives.
