Summary:   Compares Santiago in Ernest Hemingway's The Old Man in the Sea and Luke in the movie "Cool Hand Luke" with respect to their heroic qualities.


A hero can be defined as a man with great strength, courage, or ability who is considered to be a model or an ideal. Heroism is often associated with perseverance, poise under pressure, and a strong sense of duty or honor. Although a hero prefers to succeed and triumph, he should not be confused with a cheater or a dishonest person who puts victory before anything or anyone else. A cheater is a person who deceives people and is focused solely on the final outcome. A hero believes that victory over hostile forces is not necessary as long as one demonstrates intelligence, honor, and courage in defeat.
