William Maxwell's So Long, See You Tomorrow is the creative interpretation of one young mans symbolic `graduation' from the dark shadows of his past, where he describes `life had come to a standstill.' Haunted by memories of human failure, the troubled young boy recalls the `shipwrecks' of his life and embarks on a journey of self-discovery and acceptance. It is through the unnamed narrator that Maxwell explores the emotions experienced both directly and indirectly in life. It is only through recalling and exploring the gloomy overshadows of his childhood that ultimately led the narrator to his `graduation'. It is through the narrator overcoming his `resistance' to change and recognising his own inabilities that a story of love, loss and isolation is created.
