The Crucible by Arthur Miller is set in Salem, Massachusetts at the time of the 1692 Witch trails. It shows a struggle between good and evil, God and the Devil and the freedom of opinion or lack of it in those days.

The play starts in a room above the church where Reverend Samuel Parris is kneeling beside the bedside of his young daughter Betty, he is praying. We then find out that Betty has taken ill while in the forest with a group of girls the day before. Rev. Parris's niece then enters, she is called Abigail and when asked what happened in the woods she quickly explains how they were dancing and when caught her cousin took fright and fainted.
