Leonhard Euler overcame early events in his life that would point him in a direction to study mathematics. Euler was born in Basel on April 15, 1707. His father was a Protestant minister and wanted him to follow in his footsteps. Euler went to the University of Basel in 1720 to study theology, but gave it up for mathematics.
