Amazons and Ancient Greek Society

Summary:   A paper for my Classical Mythology class on how myths surrounding the Amazon tribes reflect the ancient greek views on women and their roles in society.

Historians and anthropologists look to a number of sources to explain the world views and lifestyles of societies throughout history, the world over. One of the most important sources available to researchers are the enduring myths of the societies in question. There are many myths remaining from ancient Greek society and from these myths, researchers have been able to theorize what life was like at the time. This paper will demonstrate how depictions of the Amazons, a foreign and barbaric northern tribe of women, in mythology illustrate the ancient Greek views of women and their roles, while inspiring men and women worldwide to challenge these roles. Cause and effect is apparent, from the myths, to the views of women at the time and finally to the people inspired by these ideas.
