Ken Kesey's life events are more than just unusual and his achievements are nothing short of extraordinary. On September 17, 1935, Ken Elton Kesey was born to his parents Fred A. and Geneva Smith, whom at the time were dairy farmers in La Junta, Colorado (Tanner 237). Kesey's family were both farmers and ranchers (Tanner 237). They were "a stringy-muscled brood of restless and stubborn west-walkers" (Tanner 237). They set out on their own, always searching for new opportunities instead of pioneering or doing the Lord's work for a growing nation (Tanner 237). During his childhood, he moved six times before finally settling in Oregon (Tanner 237). He attended Springfield High School, participating actively on the swim, wrestling, and boxing teams (Moritz 213).
