Summary:   relevance to today's society


I think The Glass Menagerie is not dated.  Even though it was written in the 40s, it is still relevant to life today.  Also, this book is written from Tom's memory, which means that his thoughts when he wrote the book were used with the facts from back then.  The setting of the play is based on the Great Depression of the 1930s, and it could still reflect the society today.
If this book was set in the year 2002, it would still refer to gentlemen callers.  However, they may be called a boyfriend, girlfriends, or just friends.  And they would not only come calling to the girl's front door.  Instead, they may talk to them on the Internet or on the phone.  Today it is quite normal for young adults to call or instant message people.....
