In the novel The Sky Fisherman by Craig Lesley, Uncle Jake is considered a man for others. He is a hero to Culver, Flora, and to the community of Gateway. Uncle Jake is considered a hero because he helps the families in his community and is almost like a father to Culver, whose biological father supposedly dies in a fishing accident. He also has a huge effect on everyone.

    Uncle Jake is a hero in many ways. He helps in finding  the bodies of the people who die in fishing accidents and on the Lost, which is a big river that cuts through the town. An example of this is when Uncle Jake and Culver go searching for Kalim's body. They are talking bout how Dave, Culver's father, dies and Jake tells him how he goes searching for bodies on the Lost.
