The Confusion of Oscar Wilde

For over a century, the legitimacy of Oscar Wilde's novel The Picture of Dorian Gray has been widely debated. During the Victorian era, Critics regarded Wilde's works as "deeply flawed" and "badly written." Nonetheless, within the last few decades, a vast number of readers and critics have given the novel astounding acclamations. The contradictory opinions formulated between the two eras suggest that the novel contains countless ambiguities and thus is susceptible to a wide range of interpretations. In spite of these opposing judgments, there are fundamental reasons that support why The Picture of Dorian Gray, was written in this manner. The novel was written in an ambiguous and immature manner because Wilde allowed his work to be strongly affected by his life experiences, aesthetic devotion, and paradoxical personality.
