Summary: Essay discusses how community service is becoming mandatory in schools.
For Long Beach Unified School District's Class of 2007, emotions are mixed about the districts newly adopted service learning policy. The policy will require the students now entering high school to have forty hours of community service in order to graduate. Forty hours in four years does not seam like much to many of the districts student, parents and faculty but there are still many in opposition to the newfound policy.

Some opposing the policy indicate worries about keeping up with schoolwork and extracurricular activities, while participating in the service-learning program as well. People believe it will create a burden on single parents who already spend allot of time driving their children from activity to activity and that the policy does not consider those already having a hard time at school.
