Summary: Joseph Conrad's book entitled "Heart of Darkness" depicts the Natives as being animals, but this is not the case. This essay describes in detail why the Natives in "Heart of Darkness" are more civilized than the Europeans.
Just as football players storm onto the field as a means of intimidation, the Europeans charged into the Congo and played the game as if it were being played on their home turf. While playing the game of imperialism, many fouls were committed by the Europeans. These fouls lead to the natives being named the more civilized of the two groups. Webster's Intermediate Dictionary defines a civilized person as "someone who shows good manners, a refined person" (Webster's). The natives' humanity is seen in their culture, their response to the inhumane treatment they endured at the hands of the Europeans, and how the native "cannibals" showed more restraint than Kurtz. Throughout the novella, it is evident that the people of the Congo were thought of as the lesser beings even though their actions proved otherwise.
