Comparing Characters in "Great Expectations"

Summary: This essay compares and contrasts main characters in the novel "Great Expectations" by Charles Dickens.
"Great Expectations" by Charles Dickens ventures deeply into the personalities of characters. Dickens is able to show the reader theses different personalities through physical descriptions, thoughts, emotions, and dialogue. Yet in reality, Dickens entangles all of the characters in a great web, linking them all together and revealing their true selves. By venturing deeper into the novel, the reader can comprehend that seemingly foil characters such as Provis and Ms. Havisham are filled with many similarities like being abused by Compeyson, being outcasts from society and being interested in Pip.

One of the best examples of the links between characters is the relationship between Compeyson, Provis and Ms. Havisham. Compeyson, who was a swindler, possesses the power to change people's lives. After becoming involved with his "swindling, handwriting forging, stolen bank note passing, and suchlike" (Dickens 784), Provis is caught and sentenced to 14 years of work in Australia.
