Summary: Essay discusses how the Americans fail to achieve their objective in Vietnam.
At the peak of the Vietnam War, America had over five hundred thousand troops fighting against an estimated ten thousand Viet Cong guerillas. By all odds they should have easily overpowered their opposition and achieved their objective of keeping South Vietnam free from communist rule. But they didn't. No one will ever know the real reason why this happened, but there are many different theories as to why America did not gain victory in the Vietnam War. To begin with the American troops were not prepared for the guerilla tactics that they had to face, nor were the ready to deal with the distinctive geography of Vietnam. American troops also developed a very low morale over the time they spent in Vietnam; they did not want to fight and were never as well prepared as the highly motivated Viet Cong.
