Summary:   The following is a creative essay based on the views of Ralph Waldo Emerson's lecture "The American Scholar."


Learning is defined by Webster's Dictionary as: "The act, process, or experience of gaining knowledge or skill." Webster's also defines teaching as "To cause to learn by example or experience." On the other hand the dictionary I called "life" would define these two things very differently than what the dictionary gives.

Long ago for a college writing assignment, I read a lecture by a very famous author named Ralph Waldo Emerson. That writing was called "The American Scholar." and it very much opened my eyes to some of the problems I see in today's schooling systems.
