The opening of clueless compared to the first chapter of Emma is not a second rate attempt by Heckerling to emulate the characters and concerns produced by Austen. Heckerling has turned a 19th century classic into a modern masterpiece keeping the basic character and ideas alike to Emma however it is its own text. From looking at the characters of the two pieces there are a lot of similarities, however just as many differences.
